West Ham academy graduate Ben Johnson opened his Premier League account in the 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

David Moyes raised eyebrows after deciding to start the 21-year-old ahead of the fit Vladimir Coufal, but the English right-back proved himself, grabbing the opener seven minutes into the clash at Villa Park.

Johnson was also solid defensively, and Trevor Sinclair declared him the man of the match after his fine performance against Dean Smith’s side.

The former Hammers star had concerns over how the full-back would deal with electric Villa forward Leon Bailey heading into the game, posting on his personal Twitter account: “Massive task for Ben Johnson against Leon Bailey today, Jarrod Bowen will have to help him out.”

Five-star performance

Coufal is a brilliant and experienced right-back, and he has hardly put in a wrong foot since joining West Ham.

However, he could find it hard to regain his starting berth if Johnson keeps performing and impressing at this rate.

The Hammers academy graduate has been solid in the absence of the Czech Republic international, putting in top shifts against Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, and he capped a wonderful display at Villa with a great goal.

Dropping him at this point could be difficult for Moyes, and that fierce competition for playing chances at right-back is needed at the London Stadium.

Johnson is proving that he belongs to the top-flight, and a new deal is undoubtedly on the cards with the current one expiring at the end of the campaign.

West Ham definitely cannot afford to let such a brilliant player leave after his recent performances.
