Rio Ferdinand suggests Declan Rice wants more investment at West Ham in order to stay at the club.

The ex-Irons and Manchester United defender has also responded to West Ham supporters who have grown fed up with one of their old players mooting him for a move to their Premier League rivals.

“A lot of West Ham fans have been going ‘ah Rio, why are you trying to get Declan to go Manchester United, Chelsea or wherever it is’,” Ferdinand said on the latest edition of ‘Vibe with Five’ on his YouTube channel.

“When I’m asked the question, I’ll answer it honestly. They say ‘if Manchester United need a holding midfielder, who would you go for’ and I say Declan, because I think he’s tops.”

After watching the 22-year-old’s post-match interview on Sunday after the Irons beat Aston Villa 4-1, Ferdinand added: “The vibe I got from Declan was a little how I felt when I was at the club.

“There’s a vibe like ‘if only this club invests in the players and really builds now, there’s a chance to do something really special that ain’t been done, and I’d like to be a part of that’.”

Irons investment to tempt Rice?

Rice is blossoming into one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League, if he is not already.

After cementing himself as a solid, dependable defensive midfielder, the England international has taken his game to new heights this season, scoring four goals for club and country.

He looks to have been given additional attacking responsibilities, and he has taken to his new demands with aplomb.

However, there will come a time where his talents need to be taken to the Champions League stage.

Whether that can be achieved at West Ham, remains to be seen.

The Irons are flying under David Moyes, but there will also be a ceiling so long as hands are kept in pockets.

Perhaps the recent news that Czech businessman Daniel Kretinsky is closing in on the acquisition of a significant stake at the London Stadium, could nudge Rice in the right direction, and convince him to extend his stay in east London.

In other West Ham news, the Irons want to sign this ‘Brilliant’ £25.3m South-American centre-mid who won a big 2021 cup.
