We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie has praised David Moyes for the transformation of West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen from Championship player to England hopeful.

Bowen, 24, was plucked from Championship relegation candidates Hull City in the winter transfer window of 2020, and he scored just once in his first 12 Premier League games.

But he scored eight goals in 38 league appearances last season and has started the 2021/22 campaign in fine fashion, impressing with his energy and enthusiasm as the Irons sit fourth in the Premier League table.

That led to heavy speculation that Bowen would receive his maiden England call-up this week, although that was put to bed after Gareth Southgate announced his squad for the November World Cup qualifiers on Thursday, and Bowen’s name was missing from the list.

Nevertheless, McAvennie has been hugely impressed by what he’s seen from Bowen in claret and blue colours, and has paid special tribute to Moyes.

“He’s doing well under David Moyes – there’s no escaping it’s David Moyes who has sorted this out,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “He’s changed it all completely around and Jarrod is another one [who has benefitted].

“He was playing in fits and starts, getting half an hour here and half an hour there, but even when he was playing for 90 minutes he was only really performing for half an hour. Now, he’s a constant threat.

“He deputises for [Michail] Antonio but he’s not a number nine. It works, but I would still like them to sign another number nine.”

Jurgen Klopp has poured praise on this Irons star amid heavy transfer links to Liverpool.
