Rio Ferdinand has said that he feels it will be West Ham to miss out on a top four place, but his prediction is also bad news for Arsenal, whom he thinks will finish below the Hammers, as said while speaking on his FIVE podcast.
The Hammers have struggled of late in trying to secure a Champions League with the latest result being a 1-1 draw against Newcastle, and they are currently in 5th place four points adrift of Manchester United.
Ferdinand was speaking about the Champions League positions, and how the weekend results affected the top teams’ chances on his podcast. This is what he had to say about the possibility of Moyes leading the Hammers into Europe’s top competition:
“All the teams going for fourth, bar West Ham, got positive results so it’s like right, that position is, you’ve got to perform now…Spurs won a game we didn’t expect them to win, then Arsenal obviously won and United won. I think it’s going to be out of them three to finish fourth…I think West Ham will put up a fight but probably will go a bit short just because of the depth in their squad. They’ll finish above Arsenal.”
Deja Vu All Over Again?
Squad depth has been a big issue of late, and, despite a bounce after the winter sojourn, the issue has not been resolved. Failure to make any concrete action evident in the recent transfer window has left the Hammers a good time, but not quite good enough to qualify for the Champions League.
Quite why Ferdinand threw in a disparaging remark about Arsenal is anyone’s guess. However, Arsenal do have a tough couple of games ahead, including Liverpool, Wolves, and Chelsea. Maybe Ferdinand’s comments about the Gunners are less of a personal dislike, and more an evaluation of their upcoming fixtures.
