TalkSPORT pundit Frank McAvennie has told West Ham what they need to do to keep their top stars like Declan Rice happy to stay at the club.

The Hammers have had a brilliant 18 months, finding great form in the Premier League to be in the European hunt this season while also qualifying for the knockout stages of the Europa League for this season too.

That form has seen plenty of their top players linked with moves away, including Declan Rice and Jarred Bowen.

With West Ham desperate to keep their squad together, their former striker Frank McAvennie believes he knows exactly how to do so.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McAvennie revealed what it would take for the Hammers to keep hold of their top stars like Declan Rice going forward.

“If I was the owners now, I’d be saying ‘what do you need David?’,” he said.

West Ham are on the brink of the next step. I think this is the best team they’ve had for years and years and years. They’ve got really good players.

“The thing is, if you don’t show the players now that they’re going to take another step forward then they’ll leave. Your best players will leave. If they can see that you’re trying to win something and you’re going to go forward, the likes of Declan Rice will be saying ‘I’m happy here.’

“But if you show any signs, if you’re not buying players and going forward then you’re going backwards. So if he sees that, the best players will leave.”

McAvennie knows exactly what he’s talking about in this instance and is spot on.

If the Irons want to stand any chance of keeping their squad together and stopping their best players from leaving for other top sides, they need to show that they can move to the next level.

You can see that similar things have happened with Leicester, Arsenal and Tottenham in recent years and David Moyes will be keen to avoid the same fate as them.

Declan Rice is a lifelong Hammer so he’d surely love to stay and win trophies if given the option, but the likelihood is that he has a better chance of doing that elsewhere.

If he can be shown to be part of a team that has a real chance of competing with those teams, he will certainly be more inclined to stick around.
