West Ham have had an amazing year, playing in the group stages of the Europa League for the first time and advancing to the knockout stages, and they will be hoping 2022 is better.

Tony Cottee has taken to his personal Twitter account to make a wish for the New Year and also name-drop three centre-backs he would love to see the Hammers potentially sign.

David Moyes’ men are currently thin at the back following injuries to Aaron Cresswell, Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma, and that has affected their recent form in the Premier League.

Cottee said: “What a year 2021 has been for West Ham.

“My three wishes for 2022 would be: Declan Rice to sign a new long-term contract.

“Sign a centre forward.

“Win the Europa League in May.

“What are yours?”

A fan replied that he would love to see centre-backs brought in next month, and the Irons hero agreed, saying: “Losing Cresswell, Ogbonna and Zouma in this busy period has been really unfortunate.

“I think you’re right with a new CB needed… Joe Gomez, Nathan Ake, James Tarkowski?”

West Ham fans would love to see Cottee’s wishes come true next year, and that would be huge.

However, the quality of businesses they do in the January transfer window will determine how the rest of the 2021-22 campaign goes for them.

It will most likely also have a huge say on the future of the linked-away England international midfielder.

Rice has been tipped to join one of the bigwigs in order to play Champions League football every season and challenge for major silverware, but he could opt to remain with the London Stadium outfit if they manage to match his ambitions.

West Ham badly need to strengthen at both ends of the pitch during the January transfer window.

Issa Diop and Craig Dawson clearly are not up to the levels required for their top-four ambitions, while Michail Antonio could do with a quality cover and competition going forward.

Moyes has deployed Jarrod Bowen to lead the line whenever the Jamaican international striker is not in the team, and that is simply not working.

In other West Ham news, an amazing attacker is making personal arrangements for Hammers switch in January.
