Tony Cottee has sympathy for West Ham ace Michail Antonio as he continues his rough patch in front of goal.

The former Irons man told talkSPORT [18 December] that he has been in a similar situation to the 31-year-old.

However, he thinks that the striker needs to get himself back in the box more because he has noticed that he has started drifting away from the danger zones.

He said: “It’s the most frustrating thing in the world when you start the season, you’re smashing goals in, you’re creating goals; he was on fire for the first ten games; he was absolutely brilliant.

“Then all of a sudden, you just get a spell where you can’t do anything right, and it’s so frustrating.

“I was watching him very closely the other night, and what starts happening is you start drifting around the pitch, and when the ball goes into the box, you’re sort of out wide at the corner flag.

“You’re not going to score out there, so he just needs to get back to basics, get down the middle of the pitch, be big and strong, hold the ball up and get in the 18-yard and six-yard box; which is where you get your goals.”

Antonio’s struggles continue.

The Jamaican international striker has failed to score in his last eight Premier League appearances, and the Irons are struggling to score as a team.

In their last six league games, they have only scored five goals, so Antonio’s drought has impacted the rest of the team.

The 31-year-old has been a very consistent goalscorer since he was converted into a striker, but this is his first real tricky patch in front of goal.

It seems as if Cottee has noticed that the forward isn’t getting into the box as much anymore, and that is going to be a problem if he is going to start scoring goals again.

Of course, David Moyes can’t really rotate him because he doesn’t have another first-team forward to call upon.

If the Hammers’ next few games go ahead, it will be intriguing to see if Antonio takes Cottee’s advice and gets himself back in the box.

In other West Ham news, a Champions League forward would be keen on moving to the London Stadium.
