Keith Hackett cannot believe that West Ham were not awarded a penalty in their 2-0 win against Norwich on Wednesday night.
Jarrod Bowen’s double sealed a massive three points for the Irons at the London Stadium but there was a moment of controversy when Tim Krul wrestled Nikola Vlasic down to the ground in the penalty area.
Footage of the incident was shared on Twitter during the game, prompting a response from former Premier League referee Hackett.
Writing via his personal Twitter account, the West Ham Zone pundit shared his shock over the lack of action by the officials.
“Unbelievable that no offence was seen,” said the former FIFA official.
What’s the point of VAR? That’s a serious question.
We understand that on-field referees can sometimes miss things and so can assistant referees.
But how was Krul’s WWE-style move on Vlasic not seen by the referee, the linesman and VAR?
It’s a stonewall penalty and it’s incredible that VAR didn’t even bother to look at the incident.
There’s a serious issue going on behind the scenes at the PGMOL because referees seem completely unable to operate VAR properly.
This system is controversial, yes. But there’s no need for a controversial decision to be happening in every single match.
West Ham were lucky to have a goal allowed against Leeds on Sunday when Bowen seemed to be in a clear offside position.
And now we have this, as obvious a penalty as you’ll ever see being completely overlooked.
Something needs to change because there’s no way that other leagues have as many controversies as we do when it comes to VAR.
