The first third of the January transfer window is gone and West Ham are yet to sign a player to their squad.
Their quest to sign a defender has taken to France where they have cast an eye on Paris Saint-Germain ace Abdou Diallo.
According to reports from RMC Sport, the Hammers want to sign the versatile defender on loan in the January window. He would be a smart signing.
The Senegal international is a left-footed defender who can
play as a centre-back as also as a left-back, and thus he becomes a utility
player that Moyes badly needs.
Angelo Ogbonna is currently injured and he is not expected to return this season. Likewise, left-back Aaron Cresswell has struggled with back problems. Diallo can fit in both roles seamlessly.
Diallo is an experienced defender who is an excellent passer (85% passing accuracy; 4 long balls per game in Ligue 1, as per whoscored) of the ball. He can provide dangerous crosses in the box, and in theory, should be a perfect replacement for Ogbonna, who is a left-footed centre-back, in the long run.
He has got pace, intelligence and confidence (2.1 tackles per game) to compete against top attackers. He is a tall defender which is an added bonus.
His performances in the Champions League have been impressive. With 4.5 clearances and 3 tackles on average in two starts, these are the numbers Moyes should be looking at.
Signing him on loan also makes it a risk-free business. If
Diallo proves to be a success, the Hammers can look to secure a permanent deal for
him in the summer.
At the moment, a short-term deal for a versatile defender is ideal, and West Ham must not miss out on this opportunity.
