West Ham could make an enquiry to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon in January, according to reports from reliable club insider ExWHUemployee.
Signing a defender could be a priority for the Hammers this month, with the club missing the services of two key defenders – Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.
The Hammers have been linked with defenders like James Tarkowski and Nat Phillips [The Satndard], but Rodon and Chelsea’s Malang Saar could be other options as well.
However, Tottenham are unlikely to do business with the Hammers. An update from Ex has been provided by West Ham Way:
“There is a chance that we will enquire about the availability of Malang Saar of Chelsea who is a left sided centre and Joe Rodon the welsh international centre back at Spurs.
“Although once more it is unlikely that Spurs will deal with us. Both players have been linked before.”
Rodon, who was signed by Jose
Mourinho last summer, has struggled for regular games this month, managing only
one substitute appearance in the Premier League.
The “excellent” Wales defender has also featured in the League Cup clash against Burnley. Clearly, he needs regular games.
The 24-year-old has dropped down the pecking order at the London club, and Spurs are willing to send him out on loan.
A move away on loan this month will benefit him and Spurs.
However, Spurs probably see West Ham as a direct rival as both the clubs aiming to grab a top-four finish. They could be reluctant to sell one of their players to the Hammers.
Rodon showed last season that he
has got the required skillset and mentality to sustain
in the league.
It seems West Ham will only make an approach to Spurs for the defender if they fail to land their primary targets.
