West Ham United are destined to sign a new left-footed central defender in the upcoming January transfer window.

That’s according to Roshane Thomas, with the Irons desperate to cover injuries to the likes of Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma.

One name mentioned is Nice defender Flavius Daniliuc, who could arrive at the London Stadium in the imminent future.

Writing in his Transfer Mailbag for The Athletic, Thomas shared what he expects to happen next month at the London Stadium.

West Ham will sign a left-footed centre-back to fill in for the injured Ogbonna,” he wrote.

“French top-flight club Nice’s Austria Under-21 international Flavius Daniliuc, 20, is on the club’s radar.”

Priority.

Going into January, bringing in an attacker would have been our main priority at first, but situations change quickly in football.

No one could have predicted the number of major injuries we would have in defence at this time of the season, and that needs to be addressed.

Zouma and Ogbonna both started the seasons like gladiators, and were sensational in our brilliant start, but they must be coming back to the same situation they left.

Daniliuc would be a fantastic addition at the London Stadium – he’s young, has international experience and has been playing in a top league.

The 20-year-old has been described as a “bodybuilder” in the past, so adapting to the physicality of England should be no different either.

Rob Newman has been in the job long enough now to know what this squad needs, and it is time for him and David Moyes to get to work ahead of the window.
