West Ham will have to compete with Atletico Madrid if they want to sign Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.
The Hammers were ‘very close‘ to signing the Serbia international last summer according to the Italian media, but he eventually renewed his contract and stayed.
West Ham instead signed Kurt Zouma from Chelsea, but are back in the market for a defender after a long-term injury to Angelo Ogbonna and the future of Issa Diop up in the air.
Now according to TMW, La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have registered their interest in the 24-year-old.
If West Ham are to renew their interest in the defender, who was once labelled as ‘the new Vidic‘ following some excellent displays, they face big competition.
While it’s unknown if the Hammers retain an interest in Milenkovic, the fact they came so close to signing him so recently means they’re likely to still be paying attention to his situation.
With the defender situation at the club currently, if West Ham could get a deal done then surely they’d be more than willing.
But with the added competition of Atletico Madrid now, who are regularly challenging for trophies and competing in the Champions League, Moyes may find it harder to get a deal over the line.
Milenkovic is unlikely to be a primary target for January at this point, with several other names linked, but with nothing sewn up yet and the Serbian’s availability seemingly not locked at this point then the situation could certainly change.
West Ham need a defender and an old target is seemingly back on the market, so it’s a deal to keep an eye on for this month and potentially the summer too.
