West Ham have tabled a £5million loan bid for Flamengo hitman Gabriel Barbosa for a January move, according to Spanish outlet Sport.
The Hammers want to sign the Brazil international, 25, on a temporary deal until December 2023, but his club are not keen and have asked suitors to part with his £28million buyout clause.
Newcastle United are also interested in Gabigol, while Turkish giants Fenerbahce want him too, but he only has eyes for a move to the Premier League, given his English suitors an upper hand in the race.
West Ham want to test the waters with their offer of a two-year loan deal, but the South Americans want top dollar for their most-prized possession.
It remains to be seen whether including an obligation to buy in any loan deal could change Flamengo’s mind, but that could be the Hammers’ best chance of getting a move done.
£28million is not a huge fee for a striker who has scored 104 goals in his last 147 games for the club, but the Hammers clearly have their doubts after his dry spells at Inter Milan and Benfica.
Gabigol needs to show what he can do in Europe, and West Ham could pull out of a deal due to their fears.
They could opt for someone with experience on the continent, but getting one midway through the campaign could prove herculean.
David Moyes wants someone capable of boosting his side’s chances of securing a Champions League berth for next season, and whether he would approve of a permanent move for Gabigol remains to be seen.
