West Ham are weighing up a January loan move for Manchester City defender Nathan Ake after a big injury blow to Kurt Zouma.
That’s according to the Evening Standard‘s Jack Rosser, who claims Ake, 25, is being considered as the Irons seek to address the gaping holes in the centre of their defence created by the absences of Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.
West Ham confirmed on Tuesday morning (7 October) that the 27-year-old French defender suffered hamstring tendon damage in the 3-2 win over Chelsea on Saturday (4 December), ruling him out for an extended period.
He joins 33-year-old Ogbonna on the sidelines after the Italian sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury last month against Liverpool (7 November).
Rosser writes that David Moyes remains a fan of 29-year-old Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski, but he is keen to sign a left-footed defender to give balance to the back four.
Dutch deal after Hammer blow?
Zouma’s injury is a crushing blow to West Ham and Moyes after such a strong start to his Irons career.
Alongside Ogbonna, the Irons defence has been impenetrable at times and have helped them to their current standing of fourth in the Premier League table, as well as progression into the quarter-final of the EFL Cup and knockout stages of the Europa League.
Losing their two best central defenders is huge for West Ham, and could potentially derail their hopes of Champions League qualification.
Issa Diop and Craig Dawson are now the only senior options there and Moyes cannot afford to risk having just two players in that position for a period of time.
Ake would arrive as a Premier League-proven player who can instantly slot in on the left-hand side of the defence and offer balance.
A loan deal would be the perfect option as it would allow the Irons to spend elsewhere in January, namely on a striker.
But how realistic it will be for Manchester City to let the 22-cap Netherlands international leave mid-season, remains to be seen.
