West Ham have made an approach to sign Barcelona’s Brazilian goalkeeper Neto, according to Spanish online news outlet Fichajes.
Neto, 32, joined the La Liga giants from Valencia in 2019, making the transition from first-choice shot-stopper to Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s deputy.
In his third season at the club, Neto has made just 19 appearances, two of which have come this season.
West Ham have previously been linked with a move for the one-time Brazil international and Fichajes now report that the Irons have made contact with his representatives ahead of January.
It is said that the Premier League side are searching for Lukasz Fabianski’s eventual successor.
Legendary Barcelona midfielder Xavi, now manager of the Catalan club, is apparently prepared to grant Neto’s exit and promote Inaki Pena to assist ter Stegen.
Neto established himself as one of La Liga’s most dependable shot-stoppers during his two-season stay with Valencia, and he can also count 22 appearances with Italian giants Juventus to his name.
He has experience in Europe with the aforementioned clubs and could be available for a cut-price fee.
However, at 32-years-old, is he really Fabianski’s long-term successor.
He may be four years younger than the 36-year-old Pole, but surely the Irons are looking for someone in their twenties?
They currently have Alphonse Areola on a season-long loan from PSG, but there have also been reports that they are targeting West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.
Does David Moyes not trust Areola?
Otherwise, it seems pretty simple to sign the Frenchman.
If he doesn’t, England international Johnstone looks a smarter buy than Neto, and a younger one at that.
If West Ham do sign a new goalkeeper, it surely won’t be in January as Fabianski will at least stay until the end of the season, and it can’t be ruled out that he will stay and continue as number one.
In other West Ham news, this Manchester United-linked player has rejected a contract and announced his Irons exit on Instagram.
