West Ham could re-enter the race to sign Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko in January, according to The Athletic.

The Hammers have been been on the lookout for a centre-back since Angelo Ogbonna’s season threatening injury, and the 25-year-old could offer to be a perfect solution.

He is left-footed and has been looked at by the club in the past, and given their keenness to sign a left-sided centre-back, the Ukraine international certainly fits the bill.

Good option

Unlike James Tarkowski, Matviyenko has his best years in front of him and it makes sense for the club to go for him in January.

He’s previously been tracked by the club so there certainly must be reports about him.

Given the fact that he’s left-footed would certainly light up David Moyes’ eyes as Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop are all right-footed.

The 25-year-old is a strong and quick defender who’s good with the ball at his feet and could give the Hammers an option to build from the back.

According to a scouting report, “He’s regarded as someone who’s never shy of making a challenge. He’s aggressive and direct.”

This is precisely the kind of player the Hammers need to sign in the summer and Rob Newman must move heaven and earth to get him to the London Stadium in January.
