West Ham manager David Moyes has admitted some of his players are still unvaccinated as COVID cases surge through the country.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters and Sports Minister Nigel Hudson have emphasised the importance for Premier League footballers to lead by example in combatting the virus.

The most recent Premier League figures were released in October and showed that 68% of top players were vaccinated – a figure likely to have increased since.

Some West Ham players are yet to be fully vaccinated said Moyes as per, Football.London: “We are getting quite a lot of boosters, and if there is anybody still short of a second vaccination [they will be offered it].

“Yes, we have got some players who have not taken their first injection, but we think they may take it this weekend

“We have got some doctors and nurses coming to help us at the weekend [December 18-19] and hopefully, it will see a few more people closer to being vaccinated than not so I think it is important we really try to get as many vaccinated and healthy as we can.”

This issue is ever-present as half of this weekend’s fixtures have been cancelled due to positive cases amongst squads, including West Ham’s clash with Norwich.

Masters has written to all 20 Premier League clubs as an urgent
matter, outlining the concern for players health.

A total of 13 games have been cancelled leaving teams having to
play catch up for the remainder of the season. Many are calling for a pause in
play which would just add to the backlog of fixtures in an already hectic
footballing calendar.

Increased
calls for action could see games behind closed doors return as the Premier
League do everything they can to remain playing.

Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss the pandemic, with managers and captains also meeting later in the week. The league’s governing body has stood by their intention to carry on playing matches as long as it is safe to do so.
