Conor Coventry has revealed that David Moyes told him that a move away from West Ham on loan would be good for his career.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined Peterborough on loan in August. They
are currently embroiled in a relegation battle, but the youngster has
impressed.

The “powerful” deep-lying midfielder is expected to be a part of David Moyes’ side next season, although his loan deal includes a break clause in January.

Coventry has revealed (03 December) to The Athletic what Moyes told him after he enjoyed a strong pre-season.

“At the start of pre-season, I was set on going out on loan to play more games,” said Coventry to The Athletic.

“But pre-season went well and I pretty much played every game. Then my situation changed and I felt more part of the first team. Some of the staff were saying I should stay. Mark Noble and a few of the players were saying it would be better for me to stay and maybe break into the team this year.

“I spoke to the manager and he very much put it in my hands. He said, ‘I think it would be good for you to stay, but I also think it would be good for you to play in the Championship’. When Alex Kral and Nikola Vlasic joined the club, I felt it was best for me to go and come back next season with the intention of playing for West Ham.”

Bright future

The Hammers bolstered their midfield this summer by signing Alex Kral and Nikola Vlasic, and the youngster would have struggled to break into the first team.

Ideally, a loan move to a Premier League club would have helped, but regular games are all he needs now.

This season, he has made 10 league appearances for Peterborough already and has started in four of them.

Moyes and his coaching staff spend a lot of time monitoring the development of academy players, and he is someone they are keeping a close eye on.

Coventry is a fantastic talent. He scored seven goals in 20
games for the under-23s last season, and also made a strong impression during
the pre-season.

With Noble set to leave the club at the end of the season, it seems West Ham have an in-house replacement already ready.
