West Ham have made enquiries about Lille centre-back Sven Botman, but he is unsure about leaving Ligue 1 in January, according to 90min.

The 21-year-old wants to play in his side’s last-16 Champions League clash against Chelsea in February having played a vital role in helping them secure qualifications, but he is wanted by several suitors.

Apart from the Hammers, Newcastle United, AC Milan, Leicester City and the Stamford Bridge outfit are also keen on Botman, and while Lille are not in a rush to sell him when the winter transfer window opens, it is believed that they would not be able to resist a huge offer for him.

Good option?

The former Ajax star told The Athletic in May 2012 that he has “a body like Virgil Van Dijk,” and not many can doubt the 6ft 5in giant.

West Ham could do with such a ball-playing centre-back in January in order to strengthen their defensive department, but whether they can lure him to swap Champions League football for the Europa League remains to be seen.

David Moyes needs to get at least one reinforcement in following long-term injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, and Botman would be perfect.

However, Lille are most likely going to demand top dollar for his signature given the number of clubs keeping tabs on him.

He wants to force his way into the Netherlands national team ahead of the 2022 World Cup, and he is only willing to move to a club where his progress can continue.

West Ham would be perfect for him as he can be Ogbonna’s long-term successor, but a January move looks off the cards.

The Hammers would have to wait until summer to have a realistic chance of landing him from the look of things.
