West Ham United want to bring Manchester City defender Nathan Ake to the club in the upcoming January window.

90min have reported that the Dutchman has been identified after the injury to Angelo Ogbonna left options light at the London Stadium.

It is suggested that City appear unlikely to want to strengthen a side near them in the Premier League table, but could be tempted.

Once again, Declan Rice’s name has appeared.

It is reported that if the Irons express a willingness to conclude a deal for the England international to go the other way in the future, it could change things.

Ake would arrive on a loan with an obligation to buy if a deal is agreed on, but it is said that there is enough money available to go for an immediate permanent move.

Rob Newman recently arrived at the London Stadium from City, and he could use his old links to get a deal over the line.

Surely not.

Signing a defender may be a priority for the club now, but using Rice as a makeweight for that to happen simply can’t be allowed.

The Irons are pushing for Champions League football now in the Premier League, and that is something that should fulfil his wishes.

Ake may be a good signing given his pedigree and experience under Pep Guardiola after moving to the Etihad, and it would be a good investment.

Moyes and Newman have to find a way of getting this over the line without using the likes of Rice as bait further down the line.
