Adrian Durham suggests Peterborough United central defender Ronnie Edwards as a perfect future signing for West Ham.

The talkSPORT pundit was asked by a West Ham supporter which Championship centre-back he would sign in January, presumably in response to the news that Kurt Zouma has joined Angelo Ogbonna on the treatment table.

Writing via his personal Twitter profile on Wednesday (8 December), Durham said: “For West Ham? Would’ve been [John] Souttar at Stoke but he’s injured. Ready to go in the first team? Not sure you’ll find one there.”

Durham later added the name of 18-year-old Edwards, who has featured 15 times for Peterborough in the Championship this season.

He wrote: “By the way long term, not yet, Ronnie Edwards, centre-back at Posh. He’s got West Ham written all over him. Ball-player.”

Teen talent

Edwards progressed through the youth ranks at Barnet, making his senior debut as a 16-year-old in December 2019 before sealing a switch to Peterborough, then in League One, in August 2020.

He made a couple of appearances in the third-tier but has really kicked on during the current campaign.

“Ronnie is a Rolls Royce,” Posh director of football Barry Fry told Peterborough Today in September.

“He is so calm and composed and his passing is unbelievably accurate.”

Edwards may well be someone that West Ham target in the coming seasons but they are unlikely to move for him in January to cover the losses of Zouma and Ogbonna.

It will be interesting to see who the Irons do actually pursue, with Durham seemingly ruling out signing someone from the Championship as Stoke’s Souttar is now injured.

Perhaps David Moyes will look for more Premier League experience this time, possibly in the shape of Manchester City’s Dutch defender Nathan Ake.

In other West Ham news, a Sky Sports journalist claims the Irons want to sign this ‘Powerful’ Swiss star.
