Jack Wilshere suggests Barcelona would be ideal opponents for West Ham to play in the Europa League knockout stages.

The Spanish giants were knocked out of the Champions League at teh group stage phase on Wednesday (8 December) after losing 3-0 at Bayern Munich to finish third.

Barca now have to compete in the initial knockout round of the Europa League while West Ham sail into the last 32, where the two teams could eventually meet.

That led Andy Goldstein to ask on talkSPORT (9 December) how the La Liga side would fare against the Irons.

He asked: “How do you think they would get on against West Ham at the London Stadium?”

Ex-Irons midfielder Wilshere responded: “Why are you laughing?”

Goldstein: “Well, because it’s a question you might not have asked three years ago but now West Ham have got much better and Barcelona have declined dramatically.”

Wilshere: “West Ham are better against the big teams because they accept that they’re not going to have possession.”

West Ham are better against the big teams, they accept they are not going to have possession.”

“They beat Man City & you’d say they are the closest in terms of style of play with Barcelona.”

Irons favourites?

Barcelona are one of Europe’s most successful clubs, winning the Champions League/European Cup on five occasions.

However, the last of those was in 2015 and, despite some success in La Liga, winning the title in 2019, the Catalan outfit are seriously on the slide.

Lionel Messi left the club for PSG during the summer and they have failed to replace the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi, both of whom left many years ago.

Xavi recently returned to Barca, this time as manager, but he has been unable to turn their fortunes around.

Now, there is the very realistic prosepct of them facing West Ham in the Europa League next year.

Bizarrely, considering the contrastinf fortunes of the two clubs, especially in the last two decades, the Irons might consider themsevles favourites to progress after a great start to the season that has seen them beat Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are lining up a January loan deal for this 22-cap centre-back after Tuesday’s hammer Kurt Zouma injury blow.
