West Ham need to give Alphonse Areola more playing time or they risk losing him in the summer at the end of his loan, according to L’Equipe.

The French goalkeeper joined on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, following a successful spell in London with Fulham last year.

Having previously spent time on loan with Real Madrid too, the 28-year-old is desperate to finally secure regular football after years of being touted as a prospect during his youth.

But since joining the club, Areola has made just eight appearances for the Hammers and is yet to feature for even a single minute in the Premier League.

With 2022 being a World Cup year, L’Equipe say Areola is hopeful of getting back in the France squad after being part of the 23-man side that won the tournament back in 2018.

He’s currently battling for his place in Didier Deschamps’ squad, with Hugo Lloris, Mike Maignan and Benoit Costil also hoping to be involved in Qatar.

For West Ham, while he may not be the number one option currently they need to keep an eye on the future. Lukasz Fabianski is 36-years-old now and not improving any time soon, so a passing of the guard could be a good thing for them.

Without game time, there is no chance of Areola getting in that squad but with the opportunity to leave the club in the summer at the end of his loan the decision is ultimately in his hands.

Mark Noble has previously described him as a ‘fantastic’ number two goalkeeper, but that isn’t what Areola wants. He wants to be number one, and to do that he likely needs a move or to be given an extended run in the team at the London Stadium.

If not, then the Hammers risk losing him in the summer and giving themselves another job in the summer to replace him.
