Angelo Ogbonna has suffered an ACL injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season, which would be a big blow for West Ham.

However, his absence should hand Issa Diop the chance he has been waiting for to make a huge impression on this squad.

The Frenchman arrived in the summer of 2018 and has made 101 appearances for the club, but he isn’t David Moyes’ first-choice centre-back.

In fact, you could argue that he is his fourth-choice one instead, but though Ogbonna’s injury is a problem and we hope that he is back soon, this is a big chance for Diop [West Ham’s website].

The Frenchman is still only 24 and has one year left on his contract after the end of this season.

Therefore, you would think it is going to be important for Diop to make an impression in the remainder of the campaign.

If he fails, he could be sold, but if he performs well, he could be given a new contract and could become a key player for a long time to come.

Diop has all the physical attributes to be an excellent Premier League centre-back and was described as a “monster” by Jose Mourinho a few years ago [Evening Standard].

So, this is a big chance for Diop to make a big impression on Moyes and secure a big part in the Hammers’ future and chances this season.

Diop’s future is entirely in his own hands now, so it will be fascinating to see if he takes this chance or if he allows it to slide away.
