West Ham defensive target Sven Botman appears to edging closer to a move to Newcastle United with the club in advanced talks with Lille.

The Dutch defender has been linked with West Ham with writer Graeme Bailey claiming talks were proceeding earlier this month. However, new reports on The Daily Mail claim rivals Newcastle are in pole position for the young centre-back.

The piece claims Botman is keen to speak to the Magpies about a January move and that talks between the club and Botman’s team Lille escalated on Wednesday.

The move would mean West Ham would miss out on a potential solution to their defensive injury crisis.

The Daily Mail article claims: “Newcastle United have stepped up negotiations with Lille over a £30million deal for defender Sven Botman.

“The Dutch centre back has been identified as a key signing for Newcastle’s project and he has shown a willingness to come but much depends on whether Lille will let him go in this window.”

Reporter Simon Jones goes on to explain: “Botman is understood to be keen to come and talks intensified on Wednesday as Newcastle strive to find an agreement with Lille.”

Superb option

The January signature of Botman at Newcastle would certainly be a miss for West Ham.

The Hammers are in the midst of a defensive crisis with Angelo Ogbonna sidelined for the remainder of the season and Kurt Zouma set to return in January.

Although Zouma’s return may come sooner than expected, central defensive reinforcements will still be key as Moyes’ side battle for a top four finish, challenge in the Europa League and hope to remain competitive in the FA Cup.

Ex-Ajax defender Botman joined Lille in 2020 and has gone from strength to strength, becoming undroppable last season as the club, then managed by Christophe Galtier, defied all odds to lift the Ligue 1 trophy.

This season, under new coach Jocelyn Gourvennec, the club haven’t capitalised on their successes.

However, Botman has been the jewel in Lille’s crown this campaign and West Ham are set to miss out on one of the best young defenders of a generation.

In other West Ham news, Moyes could be set to bring an Arsenal legend back to the Premier League.
