We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie is clearly a fan of Nikola Vlasic despite the Croatian struggling to appear regularly for West Ham this season.

Vlasic, 24, joined the Irons from CSKA Moscow in August but has since started just two times in the Premier League.

He’s made six appearances off the bench on top of that and in his most recent display, the Croatia international was substituted in and scored in the 4-1 win at Watford on Tuesday.

McAvennie has been impressed by Vlasic but wants him to continue working hard and putting himself about the pitch.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “The boy Vlasic, he’s had a couple of games now.

Obviously, we haven’t seen much of him as of late but he plays the same sort of area that Said Benrahma plays in.

He’s one of those players you can’t get enough of – as long as he doesn’t forget to do the work. Benrahma does it now, when [Manuel] Lanzini comes in, he does it, chasing the ball around.

David Moyes has put that into them.”

Vlasic has made 16 appearances in all competitions since joining West Ham but was clearly brought in from CSKA to add depth to the squad for their Europa League campaign.

He started all but one of their group stage matches but has only completed 90 minutes on the one occasion.

McAvennie is bound to want to see more from Vlasic going forward and there’s no doubt that his goal against Watford this week will boost his confidence and potentially lead to improved performanes.

In other West Ham news, ExWHUemployee has issued a major injury update with a ‘brilliant’ player set to be out for up to three months.
