We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie is thrilled with the competition for places at West Ham this season as big-name players learn to bide their team.

The Irons have enjoyed a spectacular start to the 2021/22 campaign as they sit top of their Europa League group with maximum points, fourth in the Premier League table and through to the quarter-final of the League Cup after wins over Manchester United and Manchester City.

David Moyes has even been able to leave out big-money deadline day signing Nikola Vlasic, who has made just one Premier League start since his £25.7million [The Athletic] move from CSKA Moscow.

Indeed, popular right-back Vladimir Coufal, 28, has seen himself on the fringes of the first team in recent weeks amid recent injury issues.

The Czech star has been restricted to just two substitute outings since the resumption of club football following the October international break with 21-year-old Ben Johnson in terrific form at right-back, and the West Ham academy graduate looks set to get the nod for the visit of Liverpool on Sunday.

Ex-Irons hero McAvennie suggests players will be fearful of missing games as their places can be easily taken.

He told West Ham Zone: “That’s what happened with Coufal and Johnson – they dropped Coufal to give him a rest and Johnson has been that good he can’t get back in!

“That’s what players have got to do, you can’t keep complaining if you get a chance and don’t take it.

“This boy has taken it and Coufal will understand that and when he gets back in he will be fired up, that’s what competition does to you.”

In other West Ham news, the Irons want to sign this ‘Brilliant’ £25.3m South-American centre-mid who won a big 2021 cup.
